Director of Individual Giving

After School Matters is a nonprofit organization that offers Chicago public high school teens high quality, out-of-school-time opportunities to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college, and beyond. Our hands-on, project-based arts, science, sports, technology, and communications programs are delivered at Chicago public high schools, at community locations throughout the city, and downtown at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts.   


Summary of Position:

The Director of Individual Giving will be responsible for leading and strengthening a multi-faceted annual giving effort at After School Matters. They will provide strategic direction, execution and management of a comprehensive program. This will include the oversight, management and implementation of individual giving strategies related to the After School Matters alumni, stewardship of all donors and broad based volunteer programs. The employee will be extremely organized and will manage all aspects of the giving process, including the strategy for donor/prospect acquisition through broad based appeals that generate significant revenue. 

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and project management skills.   They will have a full understanding of how to leverage relationships, special events and other systems (database, communications, website, etc.) to develop a donor prospect pipeline. 


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Senior Development Director, provide vision and leadership for all aspects of After School Matters’ individual giving program which includes a comprehensive strategy targeting long and short-term giving goals;
  • Develop an annual giving strategy and project plan that includes proposed annual budget recommendations, monitoring and reporting plans and key benchmarks and dates;
  • Plan, implement and manage a comprehensive direct mail program and online giving strategy that includes a calendar outlining the proposed campaign activity, expected return on investment and reporting expectations;
  • Responsible for a portfolio of both annual giving leadership gifts, and potential major giving prospects that he/she will cultivate and qualify for principal gifts;
  • Establish/maintain a highly engaging individual donor cultivation and gift stewardship program to identify and increase new donors and to increase giving levels of existing donors;
  • Develop the appropriate print materials in collaboration with the communications team to support every aspect of the annual giving plan;
  • Complete prospective donor research and briefing materials for donor calls and visits and manage all correspondence and reporting to prospects and donors;
  • Prepare materials for individual donor visits for the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Development Officer and the Senior Development Director;
  • In coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator, develop, promote, and maintain a wide range of volunteer opportunities for our corporate, foundation and individual partners within the organization;
  • Oversee the development of alumni engagement strategies;
  • Assist in securing support from After School Matters alumni and in organizing events that will raise the visibility of the organization, and raise funds for After School Matters;
  • Working with the Senior Development Director and the Manager of Development Services, create and execute a moves management plan using Raisers Edge;
  • In consultation with the Manager of Development Services, identify effective segmentation and establish processes to improve data integrity and to track and analyze fundraising results;
  • Ensure information related to fundraising strategies and activities, as well as other appropriate information related to individual donors/prospects, are entered into the Raiser’s Edge database;
  • Through research and best practices, identify, cultivate and solicit individuals for general operating support, event sponsorship, volunteer programs, and/or publicity;
  • Develop strategies for incorporating planned giving opportunities into the individual giving program;
  • Lead research efforts related to industry trends and apply findings to plans and strategies; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience running a successful annual campaign, cultivating and closing individual gifts, developing donor strategies and stewarding donors;
  • Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of internal and external constituents;
  • Outstanding written and verbal skills;
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, high volume, multi-faceted, results-oriented work environment and to analyze issues, identify priorities, manage projects and make decisions expeditiously;
  • Broad understanding of moves management and effective fundraising pipeline development;
  • Experience with research tools and developing donor research profiles;
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree or equivalent Professional Certification preferred;
  • A minimum of 10 years of comprehensive development experience including directing annual giving and annual campaigns and individual major giving;
  • Experience in alumni relations, volunteer engagement and planned giving required;
  • A proven track record of success in soliciting and securing gifts from individual constituents at the $100,000 level;
  • Excellent written, oral communication and analytical skills;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of staff, volunteers and the public including governing boards, volunteer leadership and committees;
  • Familiarity with planned giving and how to structure deferred gifts;
  • Demonstrated success in a fast-paced environment where multi-tasking and priority-setting abilities are critical to success;
  • 2 years of supervisory experience;
  • Cook County residency required.
