Facilities Assistant

After School Matters is a nonprofit organization that offers Chicago public high school teens high quality, out-of-school-time opportunities to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college, and beyond. Our hands-on, project-based arts, science, sports, technology, and communications programs are delivered at Chicago public high schools, at community locations throughout the city, and downtown at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts.   

 

Summary of Position:

The Facilities Assistant will report to the Facilities Manager and will assist with the smooth operation of event set-ups, cleaning, repairs, and billing. This individual will also assist with a variety of other tasks in order for After School Matters’ Lutz Center to operate smoothly. This position takes place at 3435 N. Cicero Ave., located in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

This is a part-time (25 hours/week) temporary position. The preferred start date would be in June, and the estimated end date is August 25th, 2017.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with setting up physical environment for events
  • Perform minor repairs (plumbing, carpentry and painting)
  • Receive and sort incoming shipments from vendors
  • Help maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior of facility
  • Perform administrative tasks, including copying, mailing, and filing
  • Complete check requisitions and track them accordingly
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Must be able to lift extremely heavy, odd-shaped objects repeatedly to store them, remove them from storage, or load them onto a truck.
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of frequency and intensity when performing physical activities such as reaching, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Must have good visual acuity, depth perception, color vision, and peripheral vision

  • The incumbent will be required to work both inside and outside in extremes of heat, cold and humidity depending on the season and location.
  • The incumbent will be exposed to modest amounts of dust and fumes.
  • Noise level is moderate to loud.

  • Ability to work under pressure and perform multifaceted projects in conjunction with performing day-to-day duties
  • Working knowledge of power and woodworking tools
  • Knowledge of current technology equipment (photography, sound, video, editing software) and art supplies
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience with administrative tasks, including copying, mailing, and filing
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
     

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
